Hahko Meets Jeff Newton

On the podcast this week is Jeff Newton of NZ On Air!

NZ On Air is one of Aotearoa’s main funding institutions for the arts, and Jeff is the guy taking funded NZ music to radio & platforms in effort to get more Kiwi music played, more often.

Everyone seems to have opinions on everything NZoA does, and doesn’t do, so I was really excited to sit down with a senior member of the team to hear what it’s like from inside the beast, and to gain some insight into the intentions and values at the heart of such a big part of the NZ Music Industry.

In what will hopefully be the first of many conversations, this podcast attempts to cover what exactly an organisation like NZoA, or at least Jeff himself, identifies as their role in the NZ creative community and how they are addressing the different issues within their sphere of influence.

Far more of an interview than a conversation, we covered a range of topics including development, media, radio & venues, while also getting the inside word on showcases, content funding, the Lorde effect and what Jeff thinks is the next biggest challenge for the industry to face.

I hope this episode sparks some healthy conversation and I’m very excited to not only hear the opinions I’m sure are incoming, but continue the dialogue with Jeff & NZoA into the future too.

Thanks to Poynton Studios for hosting, Benji for producing & photography & Jeff Newton for his time.
