Third wheeling Monty Montgomery and Yury Guaii

In this episode, I found myself saying “werk” more than I usually would.

And it might be because drag performers Monty Montgomery and Yuri Guaii do just that. They work in every sense of the word. They put on shows and travel to festivals; they work their handmade outfits and painted faces; but most importantly, they work it all out together.

They are self-professed drag partners, and tell me of their recent mengagement. Monty need’s Yuri’s late-night two minute noodles. Yuri need’s Monty to help her with her admin. Together, they love a gender-based pun.

When they’re not clowning around they’re carving a space for themselves in the Auckland drag scene. Monty lamented the lack of gigs for drag kings – so they just put on their own. Yuri was sick of just being a “spooky queen”, so she started hosting her own shows. They prove that you don’t need to be a Ru Girl to get recognised (ru-cognised?! No.).

We dabble in some toilet humour, and challenge the true meaning of “camp queen”. We shout out East Auckland and Kelly Tarltons and all the spaces their going to turn queer.

These two get this episode going at full speed, and I’m just Third Wheeling along for the ride. Buckle in! Things are about to get gay.

You can now find ‘Third Wheel’ on all major streaming platforms, including but not limited to Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts.
