Hahko Meets Louisa Nicklin

This week’s guest on the podcast is Louisa Nicklin!

Louisa Nicklin was one of the artists I found and contacted for the Two Daze 2020 compilation, Lockdown edition to make a song in 48 hours, and was one of the only live bands to contribute. I loved her song, it reminded me of The Veils, Ben Woods & PJ Harvey all rolled up, and I wondered how I hadn’t come across her before.

Flash forward to this week and I discovered that was because she had been living in Wellington, composing contemporary classical music while moonlighting in the band scene for some fun. I also found out that behind the moody, patient music is a charming and funny human who had me laughing over and over.

We reconnected after a recent performance at Mermaidens travelling festival ‘Mermgrown’, where Louisa, alongside Mason Fairey & Eamon Edmundson-Wells, delivered the standout set for my night. Somehow evocative without being overbearing, Louisa Nicklin walks that tightrope with a seemingly carefree ease.

That ease carries through to her recent debut record which has quickly become a favorite release of the year for me, which made it all the more special to sit down with her and chat some shit. We discuss her time in Wellington, composition, the danger of over practicing and how gigs need to start earlier.

Thanks to Poynton Studios for hosting us, Benji for producing and Louisa for her time.
