Third wheeling Food Court Books

Food Court Books looks like a bright green building, beaming from amongst the suburbs of Omārōrō Newtown.

Jackson and Caro are incredibly house proud, but they know Food Court is more than its exterior. They’ve transformed the space into what is now a bookshop, workspace and event room for emerging and marginalised writers in Aotearoa, NZ.

For a pair that has such a focus on local community and physical space, I was surprised to hear they met online. They tell me about how they went from webcam poetry readings, to living in Aro Valley with Dora the Greyhound.

We talk about the rich history of Food Court, and how a local reading-collective can blossom in the face of gatekeepers. Jackson tells us about their brief stint in Tāmaki Makaurau, and Caro explains why cheap zines are essential to their work.

This was a deeply inspiring Third Wheel. Listen to get the scoop on all the ideas I’m going to steal from them to implement in Auckland ASAP.

You can now find ‘Third Wheel’ on all major streaming platforms, including but not limited to Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts.

New episode every Friday.
