Hahko Meets Anthonie Tonnon

On the podcast this week, a big personal hero of mine, Tono.

I’ve been obsessed with his music since he was called Tono & The Finance Company, making idiosyncratic yet supremely relatable songs about skinny jeans, turning 23 and the gentrification of Grey Lynn. All performed in a confident Kiwi accent, something I found, and still find, incredibly refreshing.

Since those early days, Tono has built a career as unique and authentic as himself. Pursuing his passion in public transport, his series of Railland shows are an amazing mix of music, history & transport, while his Stardome hosted live show ‘A Synthesized Universe’ uses the possibilities of a modern planetarium to deliver a stunning 360-degree show to fans up and down the country including the Auckland Arts Festival.

Now, in the lead up to a more traditional style album cycle, Tono very generously sat down with me to talk about how Rail Land was the culmination of so many of his interests, how the NZ accent scene of Dunedin happened, and why a good old bus will forever defeat a car, no matter how self-driving it is Elon Musk.

Thanks to Poynton Studios for hosting us, Benji for producing & Tono for his time.

You can now find ‘Hahko Meets Humans’ on all major streaming platforms, including but not limited to Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts.
