Premiere: Primary with Nava and Gloria

Poynton Studios resident Gabi Maffey makes artists packed lunches and discusses politics; such as jumpjam, huts, jays jays drip and stationary clout… Tune in! DARE to get your 5+ a day of Tāmaki Makaraus’s creative weirdos!

This first episode of Primary, gives a whole school welcome to musician Nava Tekela-Pule (aka Strangelove of Noa records) & Gloria Florence (musician, jeweler and bff FOREVER!).

Together, us 3 put our thinking hats on for this podcast season ! What’s the hot goss? What’s in the lunchbox ? What team ? WILDCATS!

Pictured: Nava Tekela-Pule

I met Nava on the playground tunnel (a.k.a the wine cellar courtyard.)

Since then I’ve seen this mo-stache dripping, trenchcoat sweetheart, strum his child-like excitement everywhere! Got that golden-lab gladness, like a high gloss finish for us all ! 🙂

Nava (a.k.a Schofield Strangelove) is part of Noa Records, helmed by Larson Taylor. Aiming to facilitate a journey for artists’, to support the collective healings of Pacific and Maori makers particularly. Nava and his dream boat tunes, like ‘Hopeless Romantic’ and ‘It’s not easy’ provide the perfect theme-tune to his dusky saunter and on point threads. He even makes cologne!

Nava is a joyful outcome of Richmond Road Primary, 2000-06.

Gloria Florence is a folk-punk singer/writer, who gives melody to the fickle nature of chasing those who are unattainable.

I met Gloria two years ago when she complimented my poetry, calling it a gut punch. As such, we have been BFF’s FOREVER EVER SINCE !!!!

The description Gloria gives for her jewelry making business fickle fingers, pretty much sums up her music,

“Handmade, non binary … from Tāmaki Makaurau…focussing on simplicity and wearability”

Gloria’s music is simply beautiful.

It’s versatile for many vibes. For example:

“Ladylike” is great for a year 8 disco, and also a deep rave. “Krd Overbridge” has been played in cafe 121, wine cellar, and even the Ponsonby Church.

“And you can spit into my mouth.”

(Shout out to the kids that lipped the drinking fountains at primary … you’d respect that line i reckon.)

Gloria is a joyful outcome of Awhitu District Primary, and Freemans Bay Primary. 2003-11.

You can now find ‘Primary’ on all major streaming platforms, including but not limited to Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts.
