Hahko Meets SPAWTS

The Timaru Takeover continues.

I have known Jamie & Kieran of SPAWTS since we were five, growing up in the small group of musically interested kids in Timaru. Starting our musical journeys at Waimataitai Primary in two different cover bands, all the way through to Smokefree Rockquest National Finals & weekend trips to Christchurch’s Media Club to drink Flame in the carpark and mix with ‘real’ musicians like Tiger Tones, Pikachunes, Tiddabades & So So Modern.

From Left to Right: Kieran, Hahko, Jamie

When I returned from London, Jamie joined Two Cartoons on drums and I joined his new band with Kieran, an arrangement that eventually led to us all sharing a house together in Mt Wellington, Auckland where our living room was a rehearsal space and I have some of my fondest musical memories.

Since then SPAWTS has continue to grow and evolve, moving on from its simple garage beginnings into more mature and intentional guitar music, and on the eve of the release of their new EP ‘Clicks & Whistles’ it was the perfect time to talk about creative process, musical history and the challenges of knowing too much.

Thank you to Poynton Studio’s for hosting us, Benji for producing & SPAWTS for their time.

You can now find ‘Hahko Meets Humans’ on all major streaming platforms, including but not limited to Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts.

New episode every Sunday.
