Hahko Meets George Clarke (Deafheaven)

George falls into the ultimate metal band stereotype as a friendly, generous & charming guy whose music scares the shit out of me.

As the screaming frontman of his band Deafheaven, George & co-founder Kerry McCoy have done more than they thought possible for a band making ‘microgenre’ metal music. From sharing the living room of a 14-person warehouse in San Fran’s Haight District, releasing 2013’s highest rated album in ‘Sunbather’, to becoming an evolving mainstay of international metal.’

From Left to Right: George Clarke, Hahko

Spending some time here in New Zealand, as he has done reguarily over the past couple of years, I managed to pull him into the studio with the promise of cold brew coffee to chat about the pressure of media attention, the curse of genre gatekeeping and how the basis for his friendship with McCoy is a beautiful kind of shared negativity.

George was a thoughtful, funny and open guest and I really loved having this conversation, I hope you enjoy it!
